FAQ

How did you become an illustrator?

My creative journey began with a degree in graphic design, and I worked in that field for a few years. But deep down, I knew my true passion was illustration. In 2012, I took the leap, left my job, and started freelancing as an illustrator — and I haven’t looked back since! It’s been such a meaningful, colorful adventure, and I feel so lucky to do what I love every day.

What inspires your illustrations and surface patterns?

Nature has always been my greatest inspiration. Growing up in Cherkasy, Ukraine, surrounded by the serene beauty of coniferous forests and the mighty Dnipro River, and spending summers countryside with my sister, discovering the magic of wildlife - memories that still inspire me today.

As an avid birdwatcher, I find endless joy in observing and sketching birds. And when I’m not at my desk, you’ll often find me birding with binoculars in my hands, walking in nature or hiking in the Carpathian mountains, soaking in the peace and color of the natural world.

Being in India has introduced me to a world of new inspirations - vivid colors, the stunning biodiversity, and the vibrant energy of everyday life.

These influences blend with my Ukrainian heritage, rich in traditions and decorative folk art - another of my greatest inspirations. I love weaving elements of Ukrainian motifs into my work, incorporating traditional ornaments and ancient symbols into my illustrations, creating a unique artistic style that bridges the past and present.

What’s the purpose behind your art?

I believe art can do more than decorate - it can inspire and inform. That’s why I often transfer my love for nature into illustrations that highlight the beauty of wildlife and environmental issues. To make my work impactful, I’ve taken courses in ecology, blending knowledge and creativity to raise awareness through art.

What type of illustration work do you do?

I create colorful, nature-inspired illustrations with a special love for birds, plants, and folk elements. Mostly I work on surface pattern designs, coloring books, picture books, and detailed illustrations for brands and publishers. I especially enjoy drawing detailed and playful compositions that make people smile or feel connected to nature.

Do you license your artwork?

Yes, licensing is one of my favorite ways to share my art with the world! Many of my bird and nature-themed illustrations and surface patterns are available for licensing. If you’re a brand or art director looking for something unique and joyful, I’d love to hear from you!

What makes your illustration style unique?

My style is a mix of modern folk, whimsy, and nature storytelling. It’s inspired by my deep love for birds, Ukrainian culture, and the colorful world around me here in India. I love adding tiny details, symbols, and personality to each piece — it’s not just about how it looks, but how it feels.

Can I collaborate with you on a custom project?

Absolutely! I love working with brands and clients who share a passion for nature, beauty, and storytelling. Just send me a message at yuliia.bahniuk@gmail.com and let’s talk!

What are your favorite mediums and tools?

I absolutely love drawing in traditional way using gouache, acrylic paint, Posca markers and color pencils in my sketchbooks and illustrations. But mainly my work is digital - vector or combination of traditional and digital elements to get the textures and vibrancy I want. My sketchbooks are my happy place - I often come up with my best ideas there.

How do you keep growing as an illustrator?

Professional growth is important to me, so I'm always curious and love learning new things! I regularly take art and illustration courses, explore new materials, and try different techniques. It’s important to me to keep growing - not just as an artist, but as a storyteller and a person. I also love taking part in creative challenges and art community events to stay inspired.

Also, I’ve been fortunate to receive several scholarships that have helped me in this - in 2021, I won the Domestika Scholarship, and in 2023, I was awarded a Full Scholarship for a Picture Book course by The Good Ship Illustration - both incredible opportunities that pushed me to grow as an artist.

What types of products feature your licensed art?

My work has been licensed for apparel, stationery, home décor, souvenirs, accessories, mobile games, and more. You might spot my illustrations on shirts, home decor prints, bottles, calendars - even in an Apple Arcade game!

Where can I see more of your work?
